Now this will seem odd, but my baseline wings can be found in a grocery store deli section. Publix grocery stores, to be exact. I don’t know if they are centrally-made and shipped, then fried on site, or if they are completely done on-site. But they are good. Consistently good. Decent spicy breading that soaks up whatever sauce you want to put on ’em. Or just eat them as they are; they are mildly spicy as-is. When I need a quick fix of my favorite food, I can usually get it at Publix, with plenty of nice leftovers for a couple of extra days.
Publix does not separate flats from drums; they’re all good.
The Restaurant Baseline
No, its not Hooter’s, but their arch-rival nemesis, Ker’s Winghouse. It is said that one concept was stolen from the other, and far be it from me to choose sides. I’ve eaten at both, and I believe Ker’s has better quality wings and a more flavorful sauce (medium). Ker’s also seems to be more consistent than Hooter’s, in my opinion.
So there we have it…my baseline. And from there I intend to explore hundreds, if not thousands, of “wing joints” to discover new and exciting versions of wings…and also point out the abysmal failures. Let’s GO!
